As graphic men's magazines like Penthouse and Hustler gained in popularity, Playboy began to move away from the look of a girl next door. This led to a toxic, coercive working environment for models.

Hugh Hefner
Hefner founded and was editor-in chief of Playboy magazine. This publication featured revealing articles and photographs. Tetenbaum claims Hefner would award the women bonuses for their efforts.
Other women, including PJ Masten, have claimed that Hefner physically and emotionally assaulted the Playboy bunnies. She claimed to have told Hefner once that he was enraged at her and commanded her to perform a sexual assault on a German Shepherd. Masten claims she was so scared she began crying. She reported the incident to the police, but was told that the report had been dismissed.
