UK economic growth slowed as US President Donald Trump's tariffs hit and businesses grappled with higher costs, official figures show.

Anti-racism activists confronted demonstrators protesting against what they termed “uncontrolled illegal immigration” outside a Falkirk hotel accommodating asylum seekers.

Stand Up to Racism Scotland, Falkirk Trades Union Council, and local residents said they organised Saturday’s counter-demonstration to affirm that refugees are welcome in the town.

The event followed an announcement by Save Our Future & Our Kids Futures of plans to protest outside the hotel, known as the Cladhan.

The UK's largest bioethanol plant is set for closure with the loss of 160 jobs after the government confirmed it would not offer a bailout deal to the facility in Lincolnshire.

Owners Vivergo, a subsidiary of Associated British Foods, had warned that the plant would close without government support, and sources at the company have told Sky News the wind-down process is now likely to begin.

A serious nuclear incident took place at Scotland's Faslane naval base earlier this year.

Figures show there was a Category A event at HMNB Clyde on Gare Loch in the period between January 1 and April 22.

It is the second serious incident in the space of two years, with another recorded back in 2023.

Shadow Defence Secretary James Cartlidge wants answers from Keir Starmer, saying people are concerned about the incident at Faslane naval base: "It's a very sensitive situation, having said that, there's a balance to strike, I hope the government can tell us more."

Hundreds of protestors have gathered near a migrant hotel after an asylum seeker guest was arrested on suspicion of assault.

Demonstrators waved Union Jack and England flags while others let off smoke flares in the street outside The Britannia Hotel, in the Isle of Dogs.

The Met Police have now imposed conditions using Section 14 of the Public Order Act to prevent serious disruption at the protests in Canary Wharf.

"The group protesting against the use of the hotel by asylum seekers have been instructed to remain on the pavement opposite the Britannia Hotel," said a spokesperson for the force.

"Officers are currently deployed around the area being used to accommodate asylum seekers near Canary Wharf where a protest is taking place outside."

It comes after a migrant in his 20s was arrested for common assault after entering a woman's flat on Friday.

‘The Mark Dolan Show’ host Mark Dolan says it is ”highly likely" that Nigel Farage will be Britain’s next prime minister.

“The latest poll from Electoral Calculus has the Conservatives winning 35 seats, Labour 138, Reform – wait for this – 347,” Mr Dolan told Sky News host Paul Murray.

“That would be majority of over 21.”

Nato military chiefs are set to hold a virtual meeting to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine in the event of a peace deal with Russia.

The Kremlin is playing down the chance of an imminent face-to-face summit between President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, while the UK's military chief, Admiral Tony Radakin, is travelling to Washington for discussions on the deployment of a reassurance force in Ukraine.

But, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said questions of security “cannot be resolved without Russia”, adding that he did not hear any constructive ideas from European leaders from their meeting with US President Donald Trump.
