On the eve of the peak summer season, one sad certainty is that some British travellers will be turned away from their holiday flights due to post-Brexit rules on passport validity. Sometimes airport staff will make a mistake but in the vast majority of cases the passenger will be at fault.

Thankfully renewals are taking around two weeks. So people who spot a problem now and who are holidaying from the second half of July onwards should be able to rescue the situation without resorting to the expensive and inconvenient fast-track route.

The Channel migrant who taunted Brits from his hotel room was reported to police in Germany for telling men how to kill their wives with a razor blade, a Sun investigation has revealed.

Vile influencer Alexandra420 even told his 70,000 followers how to cover up their crimes in a live stream filmed just weeks before he documented his trip to Britain on a small boat.

The sick misogynist is now in a four-star taxpayer-funded hotel in West London after detailing his journey across the Channel – sparking calls for his immediate deportation.

The thug told fans that if he ever caught his wife cheating or attempting to divorce him, he would kill her with a razor blade before drinking booze “to get less punishment”.

Live facial recognition (LFR) will be expanded across the UK as part of a government remodel of neighbourhood policing.

The government says this technology will be introduced to catch “high-harm” offenders, with new rules set to be drawn up this autumn to ensure “safeguards and oversight," while balancing public and experts' views on how this tech should be used.

The technology is already in use in some areas of the country but Wednesday's announcement will see a further ten vans equipped with cameras rolled out across seven police forces, Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire, Bedfordshire, Surrey, Sussex, Thames Valley and Hampshire, over the coming weeks.

The UK government has confirmed a U-turn on its cuts to disability benefits in a bid to avert a rebellion by more than 120 Labour backbenchers.

People who currently receive personal independence payments (Pip), or the health element of universal credit, will continue to do so.

The UK must “actively prepare for the possibility of the UK coming under direct threat, potentially in a wartime scenario.”

That’s a quote from the UK government in its 2025 national security strategy.

The document also said threats from other countries were on the rise, and that the UK had been “directly threatened by hostile activities.”

But what are these threats? And what would war even look like in a modern age?

The UK's seas have had their warmest start to the year since records began, helping to drive some dramatic changes in marine life and for its fishing communities.

The average surface temperature of UK waters in the seven months to the end of July was more than 0.2C higher than any year since 1980, BBC analysis of provisional Met Office data suggests.

Scientists and amateur naturalists have observed a remarkable range of species not usually widespread in UK waters, including octopus, bluefin tuna and mauve stinger jellyfish.

The abundance of these creatures can be affected by natural cycles and fishing practices, but many researchers point to the warming seas as a crucial part of their rise.

Oasis Restore – the first secure school in England and Wales - was to be the brave new world of youth justice when it opened last year. Its founder, the Reverend Steve Chalke, proclaimed it as offering "justice and hope" to children detained for the most serious crimes – a second chance to build a future.

(Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)

But Channel 4 News can reveal that the school in Kent is having to close temporarily and the children moved out to other premises. Despite tens of millions of pounds spent on the building, security doors have proved not fit for purpose after many of them were damaged by the children, and the school has become impossible to run safely. Staff have told this programme violence is rife and children are carrying makeshift weapons.
